Jiewen Guan from Reading School, Reading and Paula Schrader from Exeter College performed a one-week work experience placement in our research group. They were introduced to mammalian cell culture techniques, cell transfection, protein expression, immunofluorescence and fluorescence—based microscopy and successfully applied those techniques to determine the subcellular localisation of an uncharacterised human protein of the ACBD family in cultured mammalian cells. The ACBD proteins, which can bind fatty acids and modulate cellular lipid metabolism, are of medical importance. Their great interest and enthusiasm was rewarded by a social event with the research team at the end of their work experience.
